I did this painting as a joke piece. If you look at it closely, you will understand what I mean. The horses are wearing the jockey silks and the jockeys are nude. I did give them helmets and boots though, I wanted to give them some dignity.
I came up with the idea in a round about way. I and been painting a lot of racing painting and I was getting tired of doing the same thing repeatedly: I just wanted to try something similar, but different. I thought I would paint the horses different colors instead of just bays, grays, and chestnuts. Then I though, "Why not just paint the owners' colors on the horses". From there I was just the next logical step to paint the jockeys nude.
I like to tell people that the hardest part while doing this painting was squatting nude in front of a mirror while I was applying the paint. No, I didn't really do that.
