The Calm Before the Race

Limited Edition S/N Limited Edition Canvas Prints

Few places in horse racing capture the excitement and elegance of the sport quite like the paddock before post time. Beautifully conditioned horses, colorful jockey silks, and stylishly dressed spectators create an atmosphere filled with quiet anticipation. This painting was commissioned by a collector who wanted to combine the high fashion of the Kentucky Derby with the familiar setting of Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California.

Watching over the walking ring is a statue of the legendary Seabiscuit, one of the most beloved racehorses in American history. His remarkable career captivated the nation during the late 1930s, and his victory in the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap—the final race of his career—cemented his place among racing's greatest champions. It seemed only fitting that he should be part of this tribute to one of America's most beautiful racetracks.

As I painted the crowd gathered along the rail, I couldn't resist adding a little humor. Hidden among the spectators are several unexpected guests, including Frankenstein's Monster, Count Dracula, a green witch, Abraham Lincoln, Waldo, and Darth Vader. They aren't immediately obvious, but if you zoom in and begin just above the #1 saddle cloth, then slowly scan to the right, you'll discover each of these surprise visitors. Every collector seems to find a different character first, making the search almost as much fun as the painting itself.
