Few racehorses have earned the legendary status of Man o' War. Racing just 21 times, he won 20 races and established himself as one of the greatest Thoroughbreds the sport has ever known. His only defeat came in the 1919 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga, where he was beaten by a nose after the start went terribly wrong.
In those days, starting gates had not yet been invented. Instead, the horses lined up behind a rope that was lifted to begin the race. As the field was sent on its way, Man o' War was facing the wrong direction, giving away valuable ground before he ever had a chance to run. Even with that costly start, he came charging back and missed victory by only a nose—a performance that only added to his remarkable legacy.
This portrait was commissioned to celebrate one of racing's greatest champions. I wanted to capture not only Man o' War's rich chestnut coloring, but also the intelligence and determination that seemed to shine through his eyes. By placing him against a deep black background, I was able to emphasize his strength, beauty, and commanding presence.
I have signed and numbered limited edition giclée canvas prints available in several sizes. Each print is faithfully reproduced on premium canvas and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
