Undefeated Triple Crown Winner

Justify made racing history in 2018 by becoming the 13th winner of the Triple Crown. He was only the second horse to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes without ever losing a race, and he remains the only Triple Crown winner to retire undefeated. His remarkable career may have been brief, but his place in Thoroughbred racing history is secure.

I've painted Justify several times, but I wanted this portrait to be different. When I found the reference photograph, the lighting immediately caught my attention. The dramatic highlights across his face and neck were the perfect complement to a deep black background, allowing his powerful features and alert expression to become the entire focus of the painting. Sometimes, keeping the composition simple is the best way to showcase a truly exceptional horse.
