Secretariat — “Big Red”

Limited Edition Signed & Numbered Canvas Prints

Few racehorses have ever captured the public's imagination like Secretariat. Known affectionately as Big Red, he became the ninth Triple Crown winner in 1973—and the first since Citation had accomplished the feat 25 years earlier.

Secretariat's Triple Crown was remarkable from beginning to end, but his performance in the Belmont Stakes became the stuff of legend. He won by an astonishing 31 lengths, completing the mile and a half in 2:24 flat. More than half a century later, that remains the Belmont Stakes record, and the world record, is still considered one of the greatest performances in Thoroughbred racing history.

For this portrait, I wanted to show Secretariat not in the middle of a race, but as the magnificent chestnut colt himself. I chose the dark background deliberately. It brings out the rich copper and chestnut colors of his coat, the distinctive white markings, and especially the expression in his eye. To me, that's where the personality of a horse really comes through.

Secretariat wasn't simply a Triple Crown winner. He was one of those rare horses who became bigger than the sport itself, and generations later, Big Red is still the standard by which great racehorses are measured.
