One thing I remember from my years riding at Hollywood Park was how often the turf races seemed to end in blanket finishes. You'd have several horses charging toward the wire together, sometimes so close that nobody could tell for sure who had won.

When a finish was especially tight, you would sometimes hear the race caller say, "It's a close one—hold all tickets." In other words, don't tear up that betting ticket just yet. The stewards still had to examine the photo before the official order of finish could be posted.

That's where the title of this painting comes from. Hold All Tickets captures six horses spread across the Hollywood Park turf course, all driving for the wire with a chance to win. The jockeys are asking their horses for everything they've got, and at this point in the race, every inch matters.

I wanted the painting to have the same feeling I remember from being out there—the color of the jockey silks, the horses stretched out in full stride, and the excitement of a finish that's simply too close to call. You can almost hear the pounding of their hooves as they come down to the wire.
